South African school children are looking forward to Statsraad Lehmkuhl coming to Cape Town in January. They have been working all autumn on a performance that will be shown on board.

The purpose of One Ocean Expedition is to raise awareness and share knowledge about the important role of the ocean for a sustainable future. And the future belongs to today's children.

This is the reason there are special events where local schools are invited in as many as possible of the ports that Statsraad Lehmkuhl visits.

Berea Primary school

Here in Norway, Elevkanalen organizes and shares all the exciting things that happen on board with all the schools in the country, and several Norwegian schools follow the expedition as part of their teaching.

So does Berea Primary school in Durban in South Africa.

- The students at Berea Primary had art projects using plastic that they have collected on the beach in Durban, says Erlend Eidsvik, who is a professor at the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences.

Below you can see the film the school made when the students cleared the long sandy beach of rubbish.

A special song

The University collaborates with Berea Primary, and Eidsvik says that the students will travel to Cape Town when the Statsraad Lehmkuhl docks January 13.

They bring with them everything they have worked on, and set up an exhibition on the ship.

- The music teacher at the school, Dane Francis, has composed a special One Ocean song, which the students have rehearsed this autumn, and look forward to perform on board, writes Eidsvik in an email to the director of the Statsraad Lehmkuhl Foundation, Haakon Vatle.

Vatle is also a musician, he sings shanties, and Eidsvik has an idea.

- You play the guitar, Haakon, and I play the piano, so we can join in if we want!

Book project

Students from Rothaugen secondary school in Bergen have made a board game, "The hunt for Statsraad Lehmkuhl", with questions to fit various subjects. The board game is also played by students in Durban.

The South African and Norwegian students have started a joint digital book project, writing about how the future could be, and other stories related to sustainability. This project will also be presented during the week that Statsraad Lehhkuhl is in Cape Town.

Three students from Rothaugen secondary school and four from schools in Durban will sail with Statsraad Lehmkuhl from Maputo to Cape Town.

On December 16, Statsraad Lehmkuhl arrive in Maputo, Mozambique, where The ship will stay through Christmas.

There is also a lot going on in Maputo, and the exhibition "Ocean's that Unite Us" is ready, with information both about One Ocean Expedition and about the ship.
